Position: Assistant or Associate Professor - Communication Design

Texas State University-San Marcos and the School of Art and Design invite applications and nominations for an Assistant Professor or Associate Professor of Communication Design beginning in September 2010. This is a nine-month, full-time tenure track, teaching position with compensation that includes a full benefits package.
 
Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
 
Responsibilities
Duties:
  • Teach three courses in Communication Design per semester at the BFA level and/or the MFA level as directed by the director including foundation, upper-division and graduate courses. 
  • Participate in the continuing development of the Communication Design program
  • Pursue research and creative activities including professional practice relevant to Communication Design per the University’s expressed mission
  • Actively engage in service activities for the program, school, college, university, community and professional organizations
 
Candidates may apply in the Assistant or Associate Professor rank and must specify in the letter of intent for which rank they wish to be considered. For appointment at the Associate Professor rank, the applicant must meet the department and university requirements for Associate Professor at Texas State University-San Marcos.

Qualifications
Assistant Professor Required Qualifications:
  • M.F.A. in Communication or Graphic Design awarded by August 2010
  • Demonstration of strong conceptual and design-based principles applied to communication design or graphic design
  • Excellent verbal and writing communication skills
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, computer-mediated technologies and core software applications relevant to the communication design or graphic design discipline, specifically Macintosh OS, Adobe Creative Suite
 
Assistant Professor Preferred Qualifications:
  • Successful university-level (undergraduate or graduate) teaching in Communication or Graphic Design.
  • Peer-reviewed external adjudication of creative/scholarly work at the state, regional, national, or international level.
  • Two or more years of professional communication design experience
  • Experience and/or interest in online teaching
Associate Professor Required Qualifications:
  • Currently holds the rank of Associate Professor of Communication or Graphic Design
  • M.F.A. in Communication or Graphic Design
  • Four or more years of successful teaching in communication design or graphic design
  • Demonstration of strong conceptual and design-based principles applied to communication design
  • A substantial and sustained national/international record of scholarly/creative/professional activities evidenced by peer-reviewed external adjudication
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, computer-mediated technologies and core software applications relevant to the communication design or graphic design discipline specifically Macintosh OS and Adobe Creative Suite
 
Associate Professor Preferred Qualifications:
  • Graduate-level research/theses supervision and advising experience
  • Experience and/or interest in online teaching
  • Four years or more of professional communication or graphic design experience

  • Twenty examples of graduate or professional work submitted in a single PDF file with an annotated index stating client, project objectives, and outcomes.
  • Twenty digital images representing design projects created by students under applicant’s direction submitted in a single PDF file with an annotated index stating course, describing project and any publication/exhibition outcomes (required for Associate, preferred for Assistant)
